Add Patient Referral

Patients referred to a specialist require a referral. 

A referral will cover a single course of treatment for the referred condition.

A single course of treatment involves an initial attendance by the specialist and then the continuing management of the condition as needed until the patient is referred back to the referring practitioner.

GP Referrals are usually for 12 months. However a GP can write and indefinite referral to a specialist where a chronic condition exists.

Specialist to Specialist referrals are usually 3 months unless a longer period is stated on the referral.

Add Patient Referral (Existing Referring Provider)


  1. Select Patient details
  2. Select Patient in Patient Search
  3. On bottom taskbar select  ‘4-Ref Docs’
  4. Click ADD button [ right hand side of screen]
  5. Un-tick the option ‘Patients referring doctors only’ if referring doctor’s name is not in list.
  6. Type referring doctors surname
  7. Highlight the referring doctor
  8. Click ‘SELECT’ button

Add Details of Referral

  1. Select Location
  2. Select Provider
  3. Select issue date. Date on referral letter .
  4. Do not enter referral end date.
  5. Select Type: Referral
  6. Select Referral period.
  7. Save.

Add New Referring Doctor 


This Referring doctor is not in Impulse when you search the referring doctors list
  1. On bottom taskbar select  ‘4-Ref Docs’
  2. Click ADD button [ right hand side of screen]
  3. Click ‘ADD’ button
  4. In Referring or requesting or certifying doctor screen
  5. Click + to add
  6. Enter Title,Surname,Given Name, ans specialty in top half of screen
  7. Tick to Save

Add Referring doctor Location 

More than one location can be entered for each referring doctor.
  1. Click + to add
  2. Location: Enter referring doctor Practice Name or Doctors name. 
  3. Select Medicare registration option.
  4. Enter referring Doctor location details
  5. Enter valid provider number for the location
  6. Enter Telephone contact for Location
  7. Tick to save
PLEASE NOTE: To enter a second location for a referring doctor, simply click the + to add and complete details as per instruction above.
