With changes to the security settings with Word, practices need to set a number of permissions to ensure that it works seamlessly with Impulse.
Practices will need to setup permissions as set out below.
A note on limitations
If you are opening Word from inside Impulse, you will not be able to have another document open outside of Impulse. This can cause a conflict in your account not being able to separate documents that are meant to be open.
All Word Installations on workstations
- Open a blank word document;
- Select File from the menu and to go Options
- Select Trust Centre and Trust Centre Settings
- Select File Block Settings
- Untick all open File Types
- Press the radio button "Open selected file type in protected view"
- Click Ok
Your window should look like this before you click OK
Add administrative privileges for all users
Please be aware that Windows writes temporary files in the user profile.
These should all have full administrative privileges:
- In the file menu under options and then Save
- Auto Recovery File locations
- Default Local File Location
- Server Drafts Location
File System Privileges
MedNet does not accept the responsibility of the computer and network security for all documents of practices. Each practice should review the instructions below and be comfortable with setting required permissions. If a practice is not comfortable with setting up these permissions, it is not recommended to integrate word with Impulse as it will not work as expected.
Below outlines the setup and implementation process for integrating document management within Impulse.
Single User Installations
A single user installation is where Impulse, your Impulse database and Word are all installed and accessed via a single computer.
Please note: if multiple user profiles are used on a single computer, this must be completed for each profile.
All user profiles that access Impulse must be give full read, write, create and execute permission to all files and folder in AND under both the Documents and Images folder, as shown in the picture below.

Multi User Installations
Server Instructions
A multi user installation is where the Impulse database is installed on a sever, and users have Impulse and Word installed on their individual computers.
Please note: Each Windows user who wants to access word processing through document manager are required to have a uniquely licensed version of Word. The licensing requirements of Word and Microsoft is outside the scope of this document, and MedNet's expertise. Please consult Microsoft or a Microsoft professional for further advice.
For multi user installations, documents are stored in a network shared folder with a shared name. This folder must have the same permissions for ALL Impulse users accessing it. Every Windows user must have full read, write and create permission on this shared folder.
Workstation Instructions
Once the user has been permissioned on the server, each workstation needs to be setup and permissions set for both Word and Impulse. Please refer Word permissions at start of document for each user. Below is the permissions required for Impulse.
- The default location for Impulse on a workstation is C:\Program Files\MedNetwork\Impulse
- Under this main folder, there is a folder named "bin". Every user needs to be given read and execute permission to all files and folders under this folder (please note: do not login as administrator to run this process, as you want to end user to have these permissions).
- Under this main folder, there is a folder named "stations". Every user needs to be given read, write, create and execute permission to all files and folders under this folder (please note: do not login as administrator to run this process, as you want to end user to have these permissions).
Once this has all been completed, please log out and log back into Impulse and Word.
